I am currently offering workshops, seminars and classes in tree sculpture grafting to Botanical Gardens, arboretums, children and family gardens, museums, schools, Universities/Colleges and Municipal and private parks as well as other interested groups here in the US.

Workshops held in a family garden, a children's garden or a Botanical park have the potential to draw a large audience. A Tree Sculpture installation is a place to visit and re-visit over time. The public's participation in such a class creates an investment for the long term in both the project and the sponsor.

Workshops are prepared for all age groups and levels of horticultural understanding. The project is considered an addition to an institution's on site exhibition inventory and offers hands on involvement both in the planting, as well as during the demonstration of grafting methods and manipulation techniques.

Classes generally gather informally outside and discuss choosing the appropriate tree species to match various design goals. Enviromental concerns such as climate, soil, and water at the site are discussed. Basics of tree botany and how grafting and pleaching occur are explained at the relevant moments as they occur during the project. Completing the project in this early stage, the class then considers the timetable of the project in terms of steps, and what to expect in growth. We learn, as part of the reciprocity in working with nature, that nature has its own timetable, as well as many possible responses to the intervention.

Commissions for tree projects are accepted based on locale, time frame, and the negotiation of maintenance issues. Park equipment, including jungle gyms, seating, fencing, arch entrance-ways, path lighting with electric wire in the tree, water fountains with piping in the tree are all possible.

Consultation on a fee basis is provided for design applications and installation of tree sculpture at public, private and institutional sites. Consultation is also offered on suitable designs and the selection of trees. Design suggestions are available for commercial applications such as: fencing, architectural structures, eye catchers and logos.

Future maintenance to the project is planned on a turnkey basis. With this in mind, I do staff training. The aim is to familiarize staff with the design goals of the tree sculpture installation and the anticipated stages of the project. Instruction is given on the annual pruning, water, and supplement needs and in any future grafting or training that the project may call for. Staff seminars may be extended to provide an introduction to the inspiration and potential of tree sculpture and some of the related issues in working with nature this way. Included is a survey of historical background, with ample visual documentation of examples.

Fees, costs, contracts and budgets are discussed at the time of the initial interview. Seminars, slide lectures and demonstrations are also available.

Please register your interest early to meet scheduling for the upcoming season.
